New York self-tapes. A reader included.

A self tape refers to a video recording of an actor's audition. It's a method increasingly used in the casting process, especially when in-person auditions are not feasible, such as during times of travel restrictions or for actors and casting directors in different geographical locations. Here are the key aspects of a self tape: Performance: The actor performs a given scene or monologues, usually as specified by the casting call. This can include scripts from the project they are auditioning for or other performance pieces. Quality: While professional quality isn’t always expected, the video and audio should be clear. Good lighting and a clean, non-distracting background are important. Submission Format: Self tapes are typically submitted electronically, often via email or a file-sharing service. The format and method of submission will usually be specified in the casting call. Convenience and Accessibility: Self tapes allow actors to audition for roles outside their immediate geographic area, and they also let casting directors see a wide range of talent without the constraints of scheduling in-person auditions. Preparation: Actors need to prepare as they would for a live audition, understanding the character and context of the scene. They also need to take into account technical aspects like framing and camera angles. Feedback and Interaction: Unlike live auditions, self tapes don’t provide immediate feedback from casting directors, and there’s no opportunity for interaction or direction during the performance. Self tapes have become a standard part of the audition process in the film and television industry, offering flexibility and broader opportunities for actors and casting directors alike.
